Going Grey is Not For Wussies

So the other day, at the Library, somebody asked me if Jack was my grandson.

Yep.

It's a good thing I was in a positive mood that day, otherwise I am not sure how I would have handled it.  As it was, I was able to take a deep breath and say "He's my son."  Later I was even able to laugh at the situation.  Part of it, I think, was that the woman who asked me was pretty young -  I'd say in her early twenties.

Another thing that helped me laugh that day was the fact that someone else, completely unrelated, walked in and - not having seen me for a long time - said "your hair looks great!"  This compliment came from someone I admire and she actually went into some pretty good detail about why she thought the look was working for me.

So, that helped, as does the fact that I am  seeing more and more positive images of grey hair in the media.  Just yesterday, in fact, I opened the latest Oprah magazine to see a feature about a beautiful 31 year old woman with grey hair.

Still, just for the record, I'd like it to be known that this going grey business is not for wussies.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

We've had some rain the last few days and it's warming up.  Spring is here after an incredibly long winter.

Registration for next fall's preschool happens this month, but we've decided not to enroll Jack.  He is simply thriving in his current setting - he not only knows his numbers and letters, but he knows the days of the week and the months.  He is also learning sign language and Spanish.  I simply cannot emphasize enough how much I love his "daycare".

Lately I have noticed a significant increase in  his independence.  For example, it has become pretty common for me to notice the quiet, look around and see him quietly looking at a book.

For a long time now he has been really into playing with my yarn, particularly making "spider webs" around the house with it.  I wanted to try to channel that energy into something I was less likely to trip on, so I ordered some knitting toys from Bella Luna Toys, including a knitting spool shaped like a mushroom and a weaving loom.

Finally, I'd like to point out that I was able to fix Jack's home haircut a little.  You can see his new haircut here and in the photo at the top of this post; his older look is visible in the picture with the book.  He now looks much less like Stewart from Mad TV, although he is still very fond of saying "Look What I Can Do!!!"

I'm astonished at the (unintentionally) rude comments you've gotten! I guess people are just surprised, and just blurt out something. They don't mean to be rude. You're right; we're not used to seeing younger women with grey hair--you're in the vanguard!--& it surprises us. Especially young people. Mark got teased for buying videotapes by a young clerk at Target. I said, "We rock it old school!"

Hope to see you at Easter!
Love,
sis'n'law Sue ( i don't remember my google account name...)

He's adorable and so are you. Thanks so much for the phone call on my birthday. It was great to get to talk to you in person.

Thank you. It WAS great to talk on the phone, but I realized later that I had completely forgotten about the time difference. I hope I didn't call too early!
