Embroidered Farm Animal Quilt

The project for the May Sew Along was a baby quilt with embroidered farm animals.

Rather than use the images provided for the project, I chose to enlarge images from a piece of fabric I have always adored.

I did, however, use chain stitch throughout -  as the original pattern suggested -  so I have added a new stitch to my skill set despite not being able to play follow the leader.

And the French Knots I was having so much trouble with earlier?  I used them again here with no trouble at all.

For the back of the quilt I used one piece of the red and white polka dot fabric, with an embroidered signature patch in the lower right.  It says "made with love by skrapyram, Ely, MN, may, 2011."

I made this quilt as a gift for Dominic and Jessica, special friends of ours who are expecting their first baby this summer.  Congratulations, Dominic and Jessica!

couchy09 - I know, I know! It's hard for me to choose between the pig and sheep butts!

OMG -it's so wonderful. How can you let it go?
What a beautiful gift and a great project. Make sure you keep lots of pictures. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Melissa and Stef!

It wasn't too hard to let this go since I knew from the beginning who I was making it for. I am very excited about this new baby - Dominic and Jessica take care of Jack every day and so they are like family to us.

That being said, it's probably time that I start making a quilt for my own kid! I've already got lots of fabric picked out for that project . . .

Thanks Erika!

One of my goals for this year was to learn about and experiment with embroidery. Alicia Paulson's "Embroidery Companion" has been great for that, and the sew along has been a great motivator. It has kept me focused on my goal even though I have so many unrelated projects that I am itching to work on.

The sew along is open to everybody and you can join in at anytime. There are some cute options for June: http://asimplebreath.blogspot.com/2011/05/hipstamatic-hair-wear.html#comment-form

Unfortunately I also said I would learn to crochet this year and I am only now getting started. Guess I better learn fast since I only have three months left!

Crochet is pretty easy to learn so I'm sure you'll have no problem catching on. This quilt is beautiful! I love the quilt label on the backing. It reminds me to do one myself. Thanks for linking to the sew along project.
